Save the CPU's from the Dumpster

In the last month I have upgraded various relatives' computers' cpu's with parts from ebay:
  • desktop 1.7 celeron to 3.06 p4 $30
  • desktop 2.53p4 -> 3.06p4 $30
  • laptop sempron si-42 to turion x2 rm-70 $35
  • laptop athlon tf-20 to turion x2 tl-58 $30
These prices include tax and shipping.

If you have an older computer, and you don't have the fastest CPU your motherboard will support, then go get it on ebay. Literally these CPU's are getting thrown in dumpsters. Some people are salvaging them and putting them up on Ebay for a modest fee. Let's encourage their recycling efforts and make computing a better experience for everyone.

Sure, a P4 at 3.06 Ghz isn't fast compared to an Intel I7 or AMD Phenom II, but it absolutely leaves a Celeron 1.7 way back in the rear-view mirror. AND you don't have to change motherboard, RAM, backup, reinstall OS, etc. etc, etc.

The procedure is easy, although you need to be careful. Even a DIY-challenged guy like me can do it.

Oh, and CPU's either work or they don't. Never bought a bad one on ebay.

Double check to find the fastest one for your motherboard:
